Meet our Brewmaster:
Russell discovered home brewing after spending time as a teacher in Guadalajara, Mexico and then as a artisan bread baker in Asheville, North Carolina.
His first brew was out of the back of a Volkswagon bus in 2002, then to helping out at Asheville 's Highland Brewery. A love of baking quickly turned into a love for brewing beer as he honed his skills as a "Shepard of Yeast".
Russell began his commercial brewing career as a craft Brewer under Master Brewer, Marty Mendiola for Rock Bottom Brewery in La Jolla in 2008. Together they won 3 Great American Beer Festival awards and 3 World Beer Cup awards. In 2012, Russell was promoted to Head Brewer of one of the busiest Rock Bottom Breweries in the country in Campbell, CA.
While there, Russell developed new recipes, incorporated bottle production, hosted Beer and food pairing dinners, initiated fundraisers to give back to the local community, and won Best Brewery in Silicon Valley in 2012.
Russell moved back to San Diego after having his first baby girl to be near family, friends and the Southern California lifestyle.
His career shifted gears away from brewpub brewing to dabble in large scale production brewing at Ballast Point on a 150 Bbl brewhouse. Russell worked with other Brewers and engineers on efficiently mass producing IPAs and other well known Ballast Point beers.
Now Russell is excited to go back to his roots as a small batch Brewer for a family owned local business. His love of brewing well balanced, hand crafted beer is only second to his love of his wife and daughter.
